The Gastric Bypass Surgical Procedure
Gastric-bypass surgery involves partitioning the stomach into a small pouch, reducing its normal volume of roughly a gallon to only a few ounces. Because the stomach can now hold so little, patients are limited in what types and amounts of food that they can eat at any one time.
Weight Loss
Patients who elect gastric bypass surgery generally lose two-thirds to three-fourths of their excess weight within 18 months. Most importantly, they are usually able to keep it off. For clinically obese patients, none of the traditional methods (including diet, medication, exercise, and behavioral therapy) can rival these results.
Important Benefits
As patients start to lose weight, they also become less susceptible to obesity-related diseases. These diseases can include adult-onset diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. Because of the likelihood of those diseases disappearing as significant weight is lost, insurance plans generally cover the gastric bypass procedure.
Patient Selection
Not every patient with clinically severe obesity is appropriate for gastric bypass surgery. This procedure is not designed to be a cosmetic solution, but is intended for prevention of pathological consequences surrounding clinically severe obesity. A consultation with the professionals at our surgery center is the first step to determining if you are a candidate for gastric bypass surgery.
Lifelong Commitment
Though safe and effective, and frequently leading to dramatic successes, gastric bypass surgery is not a silver bullet for significant long-term weight loss. People who choose to undergo the gastric bypass procedure must make a lifelong commitment to nutritional and behavioral changes in their lifestyle. They may also gain continued encouragement toward achieving their weight-loss goals by periodically attending support groups.
